Gloucester City are thrilled to announce the signing of striker Matt Green who joins the club on a free transfer.
The Bath-born forward came through Bristol City’s academy before making his senior bow for Newport County where he made 56 league appearances. Green joined Championship side Cardiff City in January 2007, and went on to gain more league experience with loan spells at Darlington & Oxford before returning to the South-West at Torquay United in the conference.
Green would return to Oxford United initially on loan playing 38 games before turning the move a permanent one, where he made a further 17 appearances.
He spent the latter half of the 2010–11 season on loan to League Two side Cheltenham Town, but then joined Conference side Mansfield Town in July 2011. He made 87 league appearances for Mansfield, scoring 54 goals, a record that earned a return to the Championship with Birmingham City before injury cut his spell in the Midlands short. He returned to action with Mansfield Town, where he was almost ever-present for two seasons. He has spells at Lincoln City with whom he won the EFL Trophy, Salford City and Grimsby Town, before joining Linfield in the Irish league.
“We are bringing Matt in to give us some more experience up top and to score goals. He’s done that all his career and he’ll do that for us in this league,” commented Manager Lee Mansell.
“Matt has experience playing in the Championship and he’ll be a valuable asset to this football club.”
“We are hoping to get clearance ahead of tomorrow’s game so fans will be able to see him in the flesh then!”
Club officials are working to secure the final paperwork to have Green cleared in time for Saturday.
The club have also confirmed they have received positive news regarding Matt McClure’s injury and are expecting him to make a return in the coming weeks.
